The individual Common Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is a beautiful iridescent bird in its own right, but together in large autumn/winter flocks can create spectacular swirling forms that are mesmerising to watch especially against a sunset sky.

The collective noun for a flock of Starlings is ‘murmuration’ which refers to the sound of the flocks fluttering wings.
